Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a shoot-at-sight order in Dhubri district due to rising communal tensions. The decision came following the discovery of animal bones near a Hindu temple during Eid celebrations, which sparked considerable uproar. In response, 38 people were detained, and Navin Singh, the district's Senior Superintendent of Police, was transferred. Leena Doley, the Senior Superintendent of Police from Hailakandi, has been named to succeed him.
The incident began on June 7, when chunks of meat were discovered near a temple, resulting in demonstrations and communal violence. On Friday, Chief Minister Sarma visited Dhubri to inspect the situation and vowed a zero-tolerance stance against communal unrest.
To preserve peace, the Assam government has deployed more security forces, such as the Rapid Action Force and CRPF. An investigation has also been launched into the purported importation of cattle from West Bengal by a suspected "beef mafia" thought to be connected to the disturbance.
