Manipur has seen new upheaval, prompting the state administration to ban internet services in five districts and enforce strong prohibitory orders in many others. Late Saturday night, tensions rose after news surfaced of the supposed detention of a Meitei leader, sparking spontaneous rallies around Imphal, the capital city. The internet blackout, which began at midnight, will last five days, according to an official order issued by the state's Home Department. The suspension extends to Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching districts, all of which have experienced disturbances in the past.
Section 163 and curfew imposed To keep the situation from escalating out of hand, officials used Section 163 in four districts, effectively prohibiting any form of public gathering, protest, or assembly. Meanwhile, a curfew has been imposed in one area, but officials have not stated which one due to "security concerns." The protests flared up in Imphal's Kwakeithel and Uripok neighborhoods, with hundreds of people taking to the streets after dark. According to eyewitnesses, several protesters committed fires and damaged public property. Prior to the blackout, images circulating on social media showed burning tires and makeshift road blocks.
No clarity on the detained leader. Despite the intensity of the protests, the government has not officially confirmed the identify of the imprisoned Meitei leader or provided information about the allegations against him. This lack of clarification has fostered even more conjecture and unrest among locals, who believe the arrest is politically motivated. According to sources connected to local civil society groups, the commander was apprehended during a late-night raid, but these claims have yet to be validated.
What's at stake? This incident has once again highlighted the precarious peace in the northeastern state, which has experienced multiple periods of ethnic and political strife in recent years. Analysts warn that if the current situation is not handled sensitively and transparently, it will deteriorate swiftly. The installation of communication prohibitions and curfews has brought normal life to a halt in many locations.
