Bhubaneswar, Odisha: In a heartbreaking episode that has raised outrage across Odisha, a teenage girl at Fakir Mohan College in Balasore died after allegedly being driven to suicide by inactivity on her sexual harassment allegation.
The student, whose identity is being withheld to protect her privacy, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar after attempting suicide on Saturday. Despite the medical team's best efforts, she died from her poor condition on Sunday, leaving her family distraught and raising major concerns about how such cases are handled.
According to the student's father, his daughter was obliged to take such drastic measures due to alleged manipulation of the investigation findings by college authorities. He states that after making a complaint against the director of a department for sexual harassment, no disciplinary action was done. Instead, the father claims that the internal inquiry committee presented a fraudulent report, portraying his daughter's allegation as fake and forcing her to withdraw it.
"My kid was a brilliant student. She trusted the college to do her justice. But the erroneous report crushed her morale. She was compelled to end her life," her father told local reporters, breaking down in tears.
The terrible occurrence sparked student protests in Balasore and Bhubaneswar, with demands for an impartial investigation and the prompt suspension of the accused staff member. Student unions and women's rights groups have criticized the suspected cover-up and urged the Odisha government to take strong steps to guarantee that no other student suffers the same fate.
