This time, the classic Delhi VIP transportation mess was for a very good reason: commuters were instructed to plan ahead, consider alternatives, and obey on-ground traffic personnel.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh attended a delegation-level discussion with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas and other officials at Raksha Mantralaya in South Block. The highest point? Singh called the official signing of the India-EU Security and Defence Partnership a "reflection of trust in action" in the face of a volatile world. He informed the guests, "Your visit is very special as it falls on the occasion of our 77th Republic Day," highlighting India's dedication to world peace and security.
Kallas also agreed, saying that there is "so much more we can do to develop defense cooperation" and advocating for more multinational relations. Important concessions include India opening its vast market to European automakers, wines, liquor, dairy, and more, and lowering tariffs on EU cars from as high as 110% to 40% (beginning with higher-end models). In exchange, the EU is anticipated to remove restrictions on Indian exports of textiles, medicines, IT services, and agricultural products.
PM Modi has praised it as a "perfect example of partnership between two major economies," while von der Leyen emphasized that a happiness India makes the globe "more stable, prosperous, and secure." Von der Leyen dubbed it historic even before it landed. In the face of US-China tensions and Europe's own desire for strategic autonomy, the FTA, when fully operational, could create a combined market of almost two billion people and a quarter of the world's GDP, improving manufacturing, jobs, and supply chain resilience.
Beyond trade, the summit's agenda includes climate action, digital cooperation, vital technologies, renewable energy transition, and strengthening the rules-based system.
