All seven passengers on a Ranchi-to-Delhi air ambulance died in a tragic tragedy that shocked the country on Monday night, February 23, 2026, when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff in the Chatra area of Jharkhand. When catastrophe happened, the Delhi-based Redbird Airways Pvt Ltd-operated Beechcraft C90 aircraft, registered VT-AJV, was transporting a critically ill patient on a medical evacuation mission.
The tragic news was confirmed by Chatra Deputy Commissioner Keerthishree G: "The disaster near Simaria claimed the lives of all seven people on board the Ranchi-Delhi flying ambulance. Rescue crews have recovered deceased people from the collision scene in Kasaria Panchayat, which is inside the boundaries of the Simaria police station, according to SDPO Shubham Khandelwal. The victims' names are as follows:
• Captain Vivek Vikas Bhagat (Pilot-in-Command)
• Captain Savrajdeep Singh (Co-Pilot)
• Sanjay Kumar (Patient, 41, suffering from 63% burn injuries)
• Dr Vikas Kumar Gupta (Doctor)
• Sachin Kumar Mishra (Paramedic)
• Archana Devi (Attendant)
• Dhuru Kumar (Attendant)
At 7:11 PM IST, the aircraft took off from Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport, headed for Delhi. Around 7:34 PM, the aircraft made contact with Kolkata Air Traffic Control but requested an alternate route due to bad weather, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). It lost radar contact and communication shortly after, around 100 nautical miles southeast of Varanasi. On the boundary between Chatra and Simaria, wreckage was found in a wooded region close to Karmatand the village.
However the exact reason can only be known following an in depth investigation by the Aircraft Accident inquiry Bureau (AAIB), which has been sent to the scene, Ranchi Airport Director Vinod Kumar said that bad weather may have contributed. District administration staff coordinated the recovery effort after search and rescue operations concluded late Monday night.
In addition to raising new concerns about air ambulance safety in difficult terrain and weather conditions, this represents a sad loss for the families affected. Incidents like this hit particularly hard because air ambulances are vital for severely ill patients in isolated locations.
