While the complete official results are anticipated by noon (0600 GMT) today, the Election Commission's most recent initial results place the BNP at 181 seats, Jamaat-e-Islami at 61, and independents/others at 7. According to reporting from Reuters and domestic television, the BNP alliance has a dominating mandate in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad, comfortably holding over 210 seats.
Tarique Rahman, the 60-year-old son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and late President Ziaur Rahman, won easily in both of the constituencies he ran for: Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17. He will become the first male prime minister in more than thirty years, and it is widely anticipated that he will take the oath of office.
With months of political unrest, economic hardship, and temporary government, the February 12 election was viewed as a make-or-break event for Bangladesh. The BNP and the Islamist-leaning Jamaat-e-Islami alliance are the main contenders in the race, while the defeated Awami League did not participate due to boycotts or restrictions. Jamaat has expressed displeasure with the counting procedure but has not yet publicly contested the result. The party is predicted to win about 70 seats, which is a significant gain but falls well short of challenging the BNP.
BNP leaders have asked for national prayers for peace and progress and stressed the importance of humility in triumph, noting that no large demonstrations are scheduled in observance of the recent national mourning, which includes the death of Khaleda Zia. Forming the administration, dealing with economic recovery, and managing international relations—particularly with countries like India, where public opinion has recently been divided—now take precedence.
