Hyderabad: Hyderabad's famous Karachi Bakery has been under investigation in the light of the recent Pahalgam terror assault and the ensuing Operation Sindoor, which have escalated tensions between India and Pakistan. Because of its connection to the Pakistani city of Karachi, a group of people protested outside the bakery's Shamshabad location on May 10, 2025, calling for a name change.
The demonstrators, who were purportedly from certain political groups, chanted slogans and made an effort to destroy the bakery's signage. Other locations saw similar protests, such as one in Visakhapatnam, when demonstrators demanded that the establishment be renamed to reflect a more "Indian" identity.
The Karachi Bakery's management responded by stating that Khanchand Ramnani, a Sindhi Hindu who left Karachi during the Partition, launched the business in 1953 and that it is a completely Indian brand. Rather than signifying any political position, the name "Karachi" was chosen as a tribute to the founder's birthplace.
The bakery has displayed the Indian national flag in its locations and made public declarations highlighting their dedication to the country in an effort to demonstrate their Indian identity and combat the criticism. In order to protect their reputation and guarantee the security of their facilities, the owners have also made an appeal to Dr. Jitender, the director general of police, and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
A wider discussion about the relationship between patriotism and cultural heritage has been spurred by the incident, as many residents have voiced their support for the bakery and denounced vandalism against historically significant establishments.
