In a significant step, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained Kanan Singh, a prominent leader of the Meitei organization Arambai Tenggol, on Sunday at Imphal Airport. The agency has since taken him to Guwahati for further questioning. The CBI confirmed the arrest, saying Singh was detained at the airport without incident. While the particular allegations against him have not been made public, the arrest is thought to be part of a larger investigation into the operations of Arambai Tenggol, a group at the core of recent instability in the region.
Following Singh's detention, tensions in Imphal rose, prompting Arambai Tenggol to call for a 10-day bandh throughout the region. To prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain public calm in the Imphal valley, authorities have banned internet connectivity in five districts.
Arambai Tenggol began as a cultural organization but has grown into a radical group pushing for the rebirth of the Sanamahi faith and the safeguarding of Meitei interests. The group has participated in a variety of events, including the voluntary surrender of nearly 300 guns earlier this year, in response to a deadline set by the Manipur governor.
