BJP Says Aadhaar Is Not a Valid Voting Proof
After the Supreme Court issued an interim order in the current Summary Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral records in Bihar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) deeply rejected the opposition's allegations on Sunday about the use of Aadhaar in voter enrollment.
Aadhaar is an evidence of identification and residency, but it does not prove Indian citizenship. As a result, it cannot be used as the only document to register to vote, the BJP explained.
BJP Claims Opposition Is Spreading "Propaganda"
Opposition parties were charged by party leaders of actively misunderstanding the court's decision that permitted voters who were left out of the revision process to recover their names on the rolls by submitting Aadhaar and other supporting documentation.
"Propaganda with no basis is being circulated by the opposition. The Supreme Court never said that voting rights can be granted just through Aadhaar. According to a senior BJP spokesperson, "the Aadhaar Act clearly establishes that it only proves identity and residence, not citizenship, which is the key requirement for voter eligibility."
Clarification by the Supreme Court
Hearings regarding claimed irregularities in the ongoing SIR process in Bihar were held with the Supreme Court's temporary decision. The panel ordered that voters whose names were removed might verify their identity by presenting Aadhaar and other recognized forms of identification. The BJP stressed out however, that this does not mean that voter registration is carried out only through Aadhaar.
Political Context
The government is being criticized by the opposition of irregular voter verification, which has swiftly turned the matter into a political one. In response, the BJP has made clear that the opposition is creating information to mislead the public.
Why Clarification Is Important
For many years, the controversy around Aadhaar's involvement in voter registration has been intense. Despite being a popular digital identity in India, legal authorities repeatedly said that Aadhaar cannot prove citizenship.
