NDA's Protest Against Modi's Mother Causes Outrage and Chaos: Bihar Bandh Backfires

Roads in Patna, Gaya, Danapur, and other districts were blocked by BJP and affiliated activists, especially from the BJP Mahila Morcha, during the 7 a.m. to noon bandh. Protesters shouted slogans criticizing RJD's Tejashwi Yadav and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the alleged insults, burned tires, and waved flags. A widely shared video of an anonymous person using derogatory words about PM Modi and his late mother, Heeraben Modi, at the Darbhanga ceremony sparked the issue. The NDA demanded a larger demonstration to "defend the honor of all mothers," even though the accused, a 25-year-old man called Mohammad Rizvi alias Raja, was taken into custody and placed under judicial supervision.

But the bandh soon took a negative turn. Videos of NDA supporters purportedly blocking a pregnant woman from getting to a hospital in Patna have gone viral on social media, leaving her stranded in the middle of the mayhem. Another alarming event involved a female teacher in Danapur who claimed that while attempting to get past a barricade to get to her classroom, she was attacked by demonstrators. These occurrences sparked an explosion of criticism after being widely posted online. Given that Bihar's assembly elections are scheduled for October or November, internet users charged that the BJP was taking advantage of a delicate subject for political gain.

One X user became angry, mirroring the mounting public indignation. RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav took advantage of the situation and wrote on X: "Has PM Modi given BJP workers orders to mistreat Bihar's mothers, sisters, and daughters? Biharis are not to be taken lightly by Gujaratis. It's Bihar! His harsh remarks, while controversial, strengthened the argument that the NDA's demonstration had failed and offended the same voters they were trying to win over.

The effects of the bandh were mixed. Parts of Patna continued to operate almost normally, despite major interruptions in places like Gaya and Darbhanga, where stores were closed and traffic was stopped. Schools in the capital shuttered as a measure of caution, but public transport and critical services like hospitals and railways were permitted although access became difficult in some circumstances. "This was not just an insult to Modi's mother but to all mothers," said state president Dilip Jaiswal, in reference to the BJP's claim that the bandh was a "success." Bihar's citizens are suffering. However, their message was clouded by the reported acts of dislike.

Tejashwi Yadav distanced himself from the Darbhanga comments and referred to the bandh as "impure and insincere politics," claiming that the 1,300-kilometer Voter Adhikar Yatra's success had shaken the BJP. The NDA rejected his accusation that the accused person has connections to the BJP and JD(U). When PM Modi addressed the matter earlier this week, he was clearly moved and said, "My mother had nothing to do with politics." Exactly reason she was mistreated? Perhaps I can forgive, but the people of Bihar won't. Now, the bandh's aftermath could overshadow his remarks, which were intended to inspire support.

The NDA's strong protest campaign could prove to be costly as Bihar prepares for a contentious election season. A Patna citizen caught in traffic during the bandh, Priya Kumari, said, "We want leaders who solve problems, not create them." The NDA will have a difficult time winning back the public's trust as the opposition takes advantage of the instability.
