Cheers broke out in the control room when the satellite detached flawlessly just sixteen minutes after its takeoff. "This is the heaviest payload ever launched by LVM3 from Indian soil and the largest commercial communications array in LEO," smiled ISRO Chairman V Narayanan. Why BlueBird Block-2 Changes Everything
This is no typical satcom bird. BlueBird Block-2, the largest commercial communications satellite ever placed in low Earth orbit, with a huge 223 square meter phased-array antenna, imagine a communicator the size of a football field floating in space.
What is its purpose? A component of AST SpaceMobile's ambitious satellite network, which aims to provide unmodified cellphones with direct-to-mobile 4G/5G connectivity. In faraway areas like the Himalayas, huge oceans, or deserts where towers cannot reach, a standard phone can receive a signal without the need for specialized technology. By collaborating with more than 50 mobile operators globally, it seeks to close the digital divide for billions of people.
Block-2 launches the next-generation network for full-scale coverage, while AST has previously tested with five smaller BlueBirds.
