The incident started late on Monday night, January 19, 2026, when two Adivasi people were allegedly injured by a Mahindra Scorpio on Mansingh Road close to the Karigaon police station. The three Bodo people inside the vehicle were apparently construction workers returning from a site check. Panic erupted as neighboring Adivasi villagers attacked the Bodo men and set their car on fire because they believed the occupants were stealing cattle or were responding to the incident. Two people have died as a result of the injuries, one of them passed away immediately and the other later.
Sadness gave way to anger by Tuesday, January 20. Both communities went to the streets, attacking the local police station, putting a government office on fire, burning tires, torching a few houses, and blocking the National Highway next to the Karigaon station. The CRPF's Rapid Action Force (RAF) was dispatched, prohibitive regulations were issued under relevant sections, and mobile internet and data services were suspended throughout the district.
As a precaution, the Army has now been brought in on Wednesday. To protect peace and order and stop any more acts of violence, troops have been positioned in critical and dangerous areas. As part of larger attempts to boost citizens' trust, a flag march—a symbol of authority and assurance—will take place today in the impacted areas, according to a defense spokesperson.
Such disturbances have already occurred in Kokrajhar.
